My second apology for the month (it’s a two parter [linefeed/3436]) goes out to ace graphic and editorial designer, Patrick Fry [patrickfry.co.uk] who is the creative gent behind No.Zine [nozine.com], which I incorrectly identified as being produced by Mr Patrick Duffy of No Days Off fame (although Mr Fry has worked with No Days Off [nodaysoff.com] on a project for Camden’s Libraries). No.Zine is a series of A5 size publications, each one taking it’s issue number as a theme, with an elegant mixture of editorial and creative contributors. I couldn’t help myself and went for the trifecta, taking advantage of the three issue packs available via the website. Also worth checking about is Patrick’s recent work for 20 Hoxton Square Projects, available free wherever good free art newspaper type things are sold… er found.

Firstly, an apology to Mr Patrick Duffy for getting completely befuddled in my recent magazine column for Grafik [grafikmag.com] and confusing his work with the equally ace Patrick Fry (guess who the next ‘What’s Up’ will be about). Unforgivable really. Especially when Mr Duffy and pals, better known as No Days Off [nodaysoff.com], have recently updated their studio’s website with brand new work, new prints what you can buy (an example of which you can witness above) and a devistatingly thorough environmental ethos that would have to leave just about every other design studio in the dust. Even Fred Butler’s signing their praise [fredbutlerstyle.blogspot.com]. They may have no days off but that’s a small price to pay for livin’ in the future.

Heath Killen [madebyhk.com] is Australia’s answer to Julian House and this is no bad thing. You only have to swing by S.P.A.S.H. or rather The Society for the Preservation of Australian Secret Histories [thespash.com] to find out why. S.P.A.S.H.’s mission is to unearth previously unseen artefacts from Australia’s secret history. The first of which is a series of lush posters purported to have been produced by ‘a desert-dwelling, film-making, psychedelic cult’ called the Dreamtime 79 [dreamtime79.com]. Linefeed recommends getting personally involved in the S.P.A.S.H. via the official site — a membership kit would be awesome, with like badges, certificates, maybe a guidebook? — or swing by Heath’s site to download some spanky wallpapers for yer iPhone or find your way through his sites slightly over complex navigation to view more of his recent oeuvre.

It’s not often Linefeed gets excited by an iPhone app but we’ll make an except for Eliss [toucheliss.com], the brainchild of Steph Thirion [trsp.net]. Not only is it the near perfect iPhone app in terms of taking the unique aspects provided by the medium and creating something engaging, addictive and fun but Eliss has also been opening doors for the game geek gal. According to her Tumblog [stephthirion.tumblr.com] she’s “being invited at all the cool parties and Hef has been insisting that I spend a few days at the mansion”. Putting aside the words of Kristen Schaal, i.e. “Hugh Hefner is dead. If he was still alive he’d be like a million years old”, it’s ace to see someone create an app that looks sophisticated and well thought out, receiving such high praise for their cleverness. Steph has a number of similarly intriguing projects on here site you might like to check out including this short story told with intereactive type [trsp.net/dd].

Rebecca Wolkenstein is a person [rebeccawolkenstein.com]. She is also using her good name to single handily champion the work of Australian designers and photographers locally and around the world. Creatives currently under her wing include Beci Orpin (see What’s Up #59), Jonathan Zawada [zawada.com.au] (editor of Petit Mal zine [petit-mal.com] amongst other things) and Jason Pietra [rebeccawolkenstein.com/photographers/JasonPietra]. The blurb on her site is unusually relaxed and open too: ❝When I started the agency I had a bunch of really cool photographers. I was pretty pleased with myself, but then I met Beci and thought, “how cool is she!?” I thought why stop at photography? Since then I have taken on all the people in this country who I think are really special. It’s a small group. Is that snobbery?❞ The image above comes from Johnathan Zawada’s ‘glory scarves’ project [trust-fun.com]. Each scarf is digitally printed with a unqiue patten so no two are the same.

Beci Orpin [beciorpin.com] is another one of those hard working Antipodean Graphic Designers / Image Makers whose work rarely reaches the eyes and ears of those outside of the confines of Australian’s golden shores. Beci’s work is informed by her grounding in a textile design so it’s no wonder she’s contributed her creative nouce to the more interesting streetwear labels around the world. Recent projects have included illustrations for a ‘Reduce the Badness’ campaign urging Australian’s to use energy more wisely. Beci is currently represented by Rebecca Wolkenstein [rebeccawolkenstein.com] (see What’s Up #60).
