Linefeed Recommends: Peur(s) du Noir

There’s no denying animated feature films are big news. As an antidote to the hyper glossy super shiny American CGI featured in hits like Wall-e and Ice Age, many non-US film makers are dabbling with feature length animation in new and unexpected ways. Take Waltz with Bashir and Persepolis for example. One of the more intriguing examples has to be Peur(s) du Noir aka Fear(s) of the Dark [iMDB] which gathers together a collection of high calibre image makers to pontificate on things that go bump in the night. Images makers such as Charles Burns [fantagraphics.com], Marie Caillou [mariecaillou.fr] and Richard McGuire [primalinea.com/mcguire] contribute their own dark delights. See the American trailer with tokenary cheesy voice over here [ifcfilms.com].

This was my absolute FAVE animation of 2008. Supergold black and white anijam!
Charles Burns is a white hot melon twister! But the stand out was Richard McGuire. Whole sequences just using pitch black and sound really allowed the mind to conjure terrifying fears…

That was totally my favourite too. I’d like to see a Charles Burns full length feature. That would be awesome… and way better than Madagascar 2. :)
