Blame Canada
Forget the Olympics, it’s Expo [wikipedia.org] where it’s really at. Much has been made recently of the rigorous (my favourite word at the moment, can you tell) graphic identity plans executed by Otl Aicher for the 1972 Munich Olympics [bibliothequedesign.com/72] and Montreal’s turn in 1976 [canadiandesignresource.ca]). But Montreal 1976 was actually seen as a unique cance to build on the success of Expo67, held 9 years previously. Expo67’s identity (as with most Expo identities) was a much more loose and playful affair as was the architecture that accompanied it, as evidenced by these postcards dug up via [alamedainfo.com].
